Scholarship Information

Eligibility

Female and gender-minority players ages 6 and up are eligible, and adults are especially encouraged to apply.

Format

Coaching sessions may be held both in person or virtually. All scholars will occasionally be required to gather for group lessons, group sparring, and practice games.

Cost

There is no cost to scholarship recipients. All costs are covered by the Chess Equity Project.

Duration

The first scholarship session will run from 1 January, 2027 through 30 June, 2027. We anticipate a second session will begin on 1 July and run through 31 December.

This program is designed for beginner-level players who are serious about the game of chess and interested in competing. No prior chess tournament experience is necessary.

Scholarship recipients will be provided with twice-monthly coaching sessions, study materials, and admission to Forest Grove Chess tournaments. Recipients will be expected to attend coaching sessions, study and play regularly, and to attend and compete in the tournaments.
